Review: Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser

My Shiseido cleanser recently finished and being the asian I am, I was too stingy to buy it from Myer or David Jones. I decided to try Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser since I've read forums and so many people were saying good things about it.

Cetaphil website "Originally developed by dermatologists especially for sensitive skin, Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser is a soap substitute that preserves your skin’s natural protective oils. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser softens your skin as it gently cleanses".

Application: I usually use this on a wet face then wash off. I was reading on some forums that if you apply it on your face while dry it works better. I tried it and nope still the same thing as applying on a wet face.
 Pros:
  • Left my face feeling smooth
  • I didn't break out
  • Odorless
  • Clear/colorless
  • Affordable
  • Available almost everywhere
Cons:
  • Doesn't wash off make up
  • Doesn't lather
  • Doesn't give me the clean fresh feeling

Overall: Everyone's skin type is different, I'm neutral about this product (don't love or hate) but doesn't mean it's the same for you!

Have you tried this product? What did you think?

  1. this is my favorite cleanser. I use it every morning and helped my face get less oily cause it was so gentle.

  2. Cetaphil is great. My dermatologist recommended it when I was on Accutane because it wasn't as harsh as a lot of other cleansers.
I switched over to Simple to try it out, but if that doesn't work out I'm back to Cetaphil :)

    1. Hi Morgin, good to hear. It's really good for sensitive skin but i dont think my skin is as sensitive as it once was.

  3. I love this cleanser. The lack of bubbles is because there isn't a lathering agent in the ingredients and you probably aren't feeling fresh and clean because you're probably used to that "squeaky clean" feeling from other products (which is actually indicative of your natural oils being washed off) ^^

    1. Hey Katherine, that is true. I'm also using another cleanser and i think it is a lot strong and does wash off my natural oils which is bad!

  4. I wanted to love this cleanser, but my face reacted to badly to this, I had eczema on my face!

    2. that's what I tought too since it's said to be "gentle" but I guess my skin didn't like one the the few ingredients in it =/

  5. I've tried this before and same as you I don't love nor hate this. I know its gentle but it is so gentle that it doesn't really cleanse skin that well -__-

  6. I'm a Clinique and Body Shop user and have a very sensitive skin and contact dermatitis which means my skin reacts adversely to every new product that I use. So I generally do not change my cleanser and moisturizer. But just like you, I've read many good reviews about Cetaphil and decided to give it a try! Well, fortunately, my skin did not develop rashes but I did have a couple eruptions and also, since it does not lather,I did not get that fresh, clean feeling! I would rate it average!

  9. Yep, I tried this one about 2 years back. Didn't love it, for similar reasons you pointed out. 1. Didn't foam! and 2. Didn't help remove make-up/dirt too efficiently. Luckily my skin's not too reactive so I get to try other brands ^^

  10. Thanks for the review. I might give this one a go.. Most cleansers make my skin break out, this one may not do that!

  11. Hi! I have been using Cetaphil for several years now. I have sensitive skin and also skin asthma which makes it very difficult for me to use just any facial wash or cleanser. My dermatologist friend recommended this to me and after I've tried it, I have not used any other product ever since. I know it doesn't lather but I got used to it and people have noticed it is good for my skin. I guess it's just different from person to person. :)

  12. I've cetaphil before but somehow it doesn't suit my skin. :( It is not useful in minimizing acne. So I switched to a another soap. :)

    follow me back? :)

  13. It doesn't lather? That's usually a deal-breaker for me. It would have a hard time taking off the grease and makeup on my face.

    1. lol cat! it doesnt remove make up for me which is a big one, coz i end up using 2 types of cleansers.

  14. I tried it and was not a huge ran. I didn't feel like my face was clean after using it and I'm sure it made me break out.

  15. thanks for your comment ^-^ for some reason we always have this cleanser in my house, it's one of those things that you can use whenever and it works!

  16. I use this too! It was initially prescribed to my boyfriend (he has acne prone skin) by his dermatologist but one day I used it and ended up liking it heaps!

    1. Oh and for people who don't like it, it's meant to be a gentle everyday cleanser, not suitable to remove makeup (i use a makeup remover prior to cleaning my face anyway).

  17. I've been using cetaphil for years. I think it works great as a morning cleanser as it is very gentle. I'll use it at night if I didn't wear any makeup that day. but it is definitely too mild to remove any makeup. Not all cleansers are meant to be super strong:)

  18. Cetaphil is great for sensitive skin. I use the cetaphil cream because it gives more moisture to my skin :)

  19. It can wash off make-up. I use cetaphil for that matter. Especially, when I wanna wash off my make-up on my eyes. Get some cottons, put cetaphil on it and rub it on my face. After that, I'll use my toner. That's how I use it.
